To reschedule at OATH means asking for a later hearing date before your hearing happens. OATH's rules define it as "a request made to the Tribunal prior to the scheduled hearing for a later hearing date" (48 RCNY §6-01).
Two facts decide everything: you get one, and you don't need a reason. "Good cause is not necessary for a request to reschedule. No more than one (1) request to reschedule will be granted for each party for each summons" (§6-05).
Timing around your hearing date
Phone and in-person timing is from OATH's Hearings and Defaults page. TLC tells drivers who haven't rescheduled that case before to call OATH at (844) 628-4692 for a new date (TLC).
Use it wisely
Because you only get one, think before you call. A reschedule only moves the date; it doesn't pause anything else. A TLC settlement offer may have its own deadline, and if your license is suspended for an unpaid fine, a later hearing date doesn't lift that suspension. Use your reschedule for a real conflict: a shift you can't move, gathering a document, waiting for a witness, or hiring a representative. After it's used, the new date is the date. If the new date is a problem later, you'd have to ask the hearing officer for an adjournment, which needs good cause and is up to the officer.
TLC has the same one-time right. If TLC reschedules, it must tell you at least three days before the original date and file proof with OATH; otherwise OATH denies the request and the hearing goes ahead as planned (§6-05).
There is one more "final" reschedule in the rules: if you defaulted and later won a motion to vacate, you may reschedule the new hearing "one (1) final time" (§6-21).

Frequently asked questions
What does reschedule mean at OATH?
OATH's rules define it as a request made to the Tribunal before the scheduled hearing for a later hearing date (48 RCNY §6-01).
Do I need a good reason to reschedule?
No. OATH's rule says good cause is not necessary. But only one request to reschedule will be granted for each party for each summons (48 RCNY §6-05).
When is the last moment I can ask?
Your request must be received by OATH before the time of the scheduled hearing. TLC tells drivers to call OATH at (844) 628-4692 to request a new date if they have not rescheduled that case before.
Is a reschedule the same as an adjournment?
No. A reschedule is asked for before the hearing. An adjournment is a postponement a hearing officer grants once the hearing is underway or at the hearing.
Can TLC reschedule my hearing?
Yes, once. TLC must notify you at least three days before the original date and file proof with OATH, unless you signed a waiver; otherwise its request is denied.
