461 Ford Fusions held TLC licenses on October 12, 2026: 457 for-hire vehicles (FHVs) and 4 yellow taxis. It ranks 31st among TLC models and is Ford's third biggest group on TLC plates, after the Transit Connect van and the Escape.
The Fusion is a mixed bag of powertrains — hybrid, plug-in hybrid and gas — and an aging one: every TLC Fusion is model-year 2020 or older. It also has the second-highest livery share among models ranked 21st to 40th: 47 cars, or 10.2%, against 2.0% of all FHVs.
Source of the counts
TLC's FHV list and medallion vehicle list have no model column, so each VIN was decoded with NHTSA's vPIC. vPIC names the family "Fusion", so Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi are counted here and split by fuel type. One-day snapshot.
Model years: nothing after 2020
2019 is the peak with 106 cars. 2018 has 90 (4 of them taxis), 2017 has 73, 2016 has 64 and 2020 has 52. 140 Fusions (30.4%) are 2016 or older. Since no TLC Fusion is newer than 2020, every one of them is closer to TLC's age limits than the average FHV. See TLC vehicle retirement age before you buy or lease one.
Three powertrains, three EPA ratings
For the 2019 model year, the most common one, fueleconomy.gov lists:
- Fusion Hybrid FWD: 42 mpg combined (43 city, 41 highway).
- Fusion Hybrid Taxi: 41 mpg combined. EPA rates this taxi version separately.
- Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid: 42 mpg on gas, with 26 miles of electric range.
- Gas Fusions with the 1.5-liter turbo or 2.5-liter engine: 25 to 27 mpg combined.
On EPA numbers, a hybrid Fusion uses about 35–40% less fuel per mile than a gas one. Check which version you are buying; the lease-vs-buy tool shows what that difference is worth over a year.
Base types and taxis
410 (88.9%) are at black car bases, 47 at livery bases and 4 are yellow taxis. None are marked "WAV"; 36 carry TLC's "PILOT" label, the most of any model on this list of 21–40, but the dataset doesn't define it, so we don't count them as accessible. No new Fusion can become a taxi: since October 18, 2024 every hack-up must be an approved accessible vehicle (TLC). Livery work is covered in livery drivers.
Buying a used TLC Fusion: get the paperwork right
With no TLC Fusion newer than 2020, any Fusion you get will be a used car, and it may already have TLC history. Rule 59A-28(b) in chapter 59 sets fines for mismatched papers:
- The plate number must be the same on the motor vehicle tax stamp, the registration, the TLC decals and the plates on the car: $200 if you plead guilty before a hearing, $300 after one.
- The last six digits of the VIN on the TLC decals must match the registration and the car: $100.
- A New York-registered FHV must carry plates embossed "T & LC": $100–$350 and suspension until fixed.
After a vehicle transfer, check every document once the new decals arrive, and keep copies in the car. A mismatch is easy to miss when the plates came from one car and the decals were printed for another, and the fine is written to the owner. Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
TLC's vehicle lists have no make/model column, so TLC Help decoded the VIN of every licensed vehicle with NHTSA's vPIC decoder (one representative VIN per manufacturer + model-descriptor + model-year pattern) and published only counts. 5 of 115,081 vehicles (0%) could not be decoded to a model and are left out. vPIC sometimes reports trim-family names (e.g. 'RX' not 'RX 350h'); powertrain comes from vPIC's electrification/fuel fields and may misclassify a few model years. Snapshot lists change daily.

Frequently asked questions
How many Ford Fusions are licensed by the TLC?
461 on October 12, 2026: 457 for-hire vehicles and 4 yellow taxis, or 0.40% of all TLC vehicles. TLC Help counted them by decoding each VIN with NHTSA's vPIC decoder.
Are TLC Fusions hybrids?
Most: 271 decode as hybrid, 12 as plug-in hybrid (Fusion Energi) and 178 as gas.
Why are there no Fusions newer than 2020 on TLC plates?
The TLC lists show model years 2010 to 2020 only. The data can't say why; what it means for you is that every TLC Fusion is now an older car, so check the age rules before you buy one.
What paperwork mistakes can get a used TLC car fined?
Rule 59A-28(b) requires the plate number to match on the tax stamp, registration, TLC decals and the plates ($200 if you plead guilty before a hearing, $300 after), and the last six VIN digits on the decals to match the registration and the car ($100).
