Pay Per Trip is one of the ways to fund an E-ZPass New York account. Your account is linked directly to your bank account, and "no money is held as a 'prepaid balance' like with the other E-ZPass plans. Instead, Pay Per Trip enables you to pay for your E-ZPass tolls the same day you use them" (Port Authority).

The MTA describes it the same way: instead of keeping a minimum balance, you "pay for only the tolls you use by linking your E-ZPass directly to your bank account," and it is open to new and existing account holders (MTA). The MTA's congestion FAQ adds: "If you opt into Pay Per Trip, no pre-paid balance is required" (MTA FAQ).

Why it matters to TLC drivers

  1. No money tied up in a balance

With automatic replenishment you keep a prepaid balance that is topped up from a card or bank. With Pay Per Trip, tolls come out of your bank account the day you use them. That can suit a driver who doesn't want cash sitting in an E-ZPass account.

  2. No credit card needed

Pay Per Trip uses a bank account. The MTA also dropped the $10 deposit for accounts without a linked credit card.

  3. Personal tags are allowed in TLC vehicles

TLC Rule 80-15(d)(3): taxi, FHV and green cab drivers 'may use personal E-ZPass tags' to meet the E-ZPass rule. If you use your own tag, you choose how your account is funded.

  4. Your bank account has to cover it

Because tolls are paid the same day, check your bank balance after busy toll days, such as airport or New Jersey runs.

The full comparison of all three funding methods (automatic replenishment, Pay Per Trip and cash at VanillaDirect stores) is in paying for E-ZPass without a credit card.

Where you will see this term

  • On the E-ZPass NY website, which has its own Pay Per Trip FAQ (the Port Authority page links to it).
  • On the MTA's "How to pay tolls" page, listed with automatic replenishment and cash payments.
  • On the Port Authority's E-ZPass page, under its own "Pay Per Trip" heading.

Common mix-ups

  • Not Tolls by Mail. Pay Per Trip is still E-ZPass, so you get E-ZPass rates where your tag and plate are read. Tolls by Mail is a bill sent to the registered owner when there is no E-ZPass account.
  • Not available on out-of-state accounts. The Port Authority says it is offered only to E-ZPass New York account holders.
  • Not the owner's replenishment deposit. If the owner supplies the tag, TLC rules let the owner require a replenishment account from the driver; that is a separate arrangement (replenishment account).

Frequently asked questions

What is E-ZPass Pay Per Trip?

An E-ZPass NY payment option that links your account directly to your bank account. Instead of keeping a prepaid balance, you pay for your tolls the same day you use them.

Who can use Pay Per Trip?

E-ZPass New York account holders. The Port Authority says it is 'currently only offered to E-ZPass New York account holders.' The MTA says it is available to new and existing account holders.

Is Pay Per Trip the same as the congestion Per-Trip Charge Plan?

No. Pay Per Trip is how you pay your own E-ZPass bill. The Per-Trip Charge Plan is the MTA arrangement that charges taxi and FHV passengers $0.75 or $1.50 per congestion-zone trip. They only share the words 'per trip.'

Can I use Pay Per Trip on the tag in my TLC car?

TLC rules let drivers use a personal E-ZPass tag in a taxi, FHV or green cab (Rule 80-15(d)(3)). How that account is funded is between you and E-ZPass NY. If the owner supplies the tag, the owner's account and rules apply.
