In short: if you are in crisis, call or text 988 — it is free, confidential and available in more than 200 languages. For ongoing stress, money worries or family strain, NYC drivers can get free counseling from social workers through the IDG Mental Health & Wellness Program (917-594-4898, wellness@drivingguild.org). You can also walk into the TLC Wellness Room in Long Island City (Tuesday–Thursday, 11 AM–2 PM), and app and black-car drivers enrolled in Drivers Benefits can chat with a virtual doctor 24/7 at no cost.
Long shifts alone, traffic, debt, hostile passengers and app pressure wear people down. Asking for help early is not a sign of weakness, and getting counseling is not a TLC violation. The programs below describe themselves as free or low-cost, and the counseling ones as confidential. This page lists who runs each one, who can use it and how to reach it, as of 2026-10-12.
Every option in one table
988: help at any hour
TLC's Driver Resources page lists NYC 988 as a "free confidential support, crisis intervention, and referral program" for anyone seeking help with mental health or substance use. Counselors can help with "stress, depression, anxiety, or drug and alcohol misuse", give short-term counseling, connect you to other services and help book appointments, in more than 200 languages. You can:
- call 988;
- text 988;
- use the 988 Lifeline chat online.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
Counseling made for drivers: the IDG program
The IDG Mental Health & Wellness Program is run by the Independent Drivers Guild with funding from the Black Car Fund. It offers:
- individual, couples and family counseling with experienced social workers, free of charge;
- help applying for free benefits such as SNAP, HRA programs and other financial assistance;
- Wellness Community Spaces, where drivers meet to share resources and support each other;
- a Wellness Advocate Program, in which drivers support other drivers.
Counselors speak English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali and Moroccan. To start, call 917-594-4898, email wellness@drivingguild.org, or fill in the sign-up form on the program's page.
Who qualifies. The Black Car Fund lists the program among the free Drivers Benefits for eligible drivers (BCF FAQ) — drivers affiliated with a Fund member base: traditional black car bases, luxury limousine bases, high-volume app bases such as Uber and Lyft, and some non-emergency medical transport. Drivers Benefits sets an hours or income test (for TLC-registered black car drivers, at least 20 hours of passenger service in the past 30 days to start). If you are not sure, contact the Wellness Team and ask — it costs nothing. Yellow and green taxi drivers who don't qualify can use 988 and the TLC options below.
The TLC Wellness Room and Express Care kiosk
The TLC Owner/Driver Resource Center FAQ says medallion owners, licensees and drivers can walk in to the Wellness Room, in the waiting room of TLC's Long Island City office (31-00 47th Avenue), Tuesday to Thursday, 11 AM to 2 PM. The room has a NYC Health + Hospitals Express Care kiosk that connects you by video to live professionals for physical health needs and mental wellness. The FAQ describes Express Care as "affordable" and "low-cost", so ask about any charge before you start.
This is a good choice if you are already at TLC for a licensing appointment and want to talk to someone the same day. Check that the office is open first: TLC offices close on city holidays, such as October 12, 2026. The Owner/Driver Resource Center guide covers its other free services.
Virtual doctor for app and black-car drivers
Eligible drivers enrolled in Drivers Benefits get virtual primary care through CirrusMD at no cost (BCF). You chat with a board-certified doctor, usually within a minute, 24/7, with no appointment. The BCF page lists "general questions about your health or mental well-being" among the reasons to use it. If you prefer a language other than English or Spanish, the doctor can bring in a translator. It is for non-emergencies; in an emergency call 911.
Some Drivers Benefits, such as accident disability and critical illness insurance, only cover you if you enroll before you get sick or hurt. Enrollment is free — see must I enroll in Drivers Benefits before an injury.
Step by step: which door to knock on

Mistakes that cost drivers money, points or their license
- Driving while impaired. Rule
80-14(b)bans driving — or even sitting in your TLC vehicle — for at least six hours after drinking any alcohol or taking any "Drug". TLC defines Drugs as controlled substances under Public Health Law §3306, which can include some prescription medicines. The penalty is revocation. If a doctor prescribes something, ask whether it is a controlled substance and how it affects driving. - Forgetting the annual drug test. Every driver must pass a yearly drug test (
80-14(d)); a positive result means summary suspension and possible revocation. See the TLC drug test. - Pushing past the hours limits. You may not carry passengers more than 10 hours in any 24 or 60 hours from Monday to Sunday (
80-14(f)). Exhaustion makes crashes and summonses more likely, and points add up under the Persistent Violator Program. - Paying for "help". Every program on this page is free or low-cost through official channels. Anyone who charges a fee to "enroll" you, or pressures you to decide right now, is a red flag — see scams targeting drivers.
- Stopping work without a plan. If you need time off, there are ways to protect your license and income — read taking a break from driving.
