In short: In TLC's trip records for September 2025 – August 2026, the typical (median) Uber or Lyft trip in NYC paid the driver $15.83, before tips. The average was $21.20, pulled up by long airport and out-of-town rides. Per passenger mile, drivers got $4.32; per passenger minute, $1.07. On most trips the pay matched TLC's minimum formula almost to the cent — the apps pay the floor, not more.
All figures are our counts of 251.6 million "clean" app trips (1 minute–4 hours, under 150 miles, fare above $0). driver_pay is net of the company's commission and excludes tips and tolls (TLC dictionary).
The numbers at a glance
Pay per trip, month by month
January 2026 had the lowest average ($19.88); September 2025 the highest ($22.03). Uber trips averaged $21.64 and Lyft trips $20.04 in driver pay, partly because trip mixes differ:
By trip length
Short trips pay little per trip but a lot per mile; long trips the reverse. Per minute, longer trips pay a little more because they move faster. The minimum formula explains the pattern. A 1.5-mile, 10-minute trip earns about $1.92 for the miles and $6.81 for the minutes, so time is almost 80% of the pay. On a 15-mile, 35-minute highway trip, miles bring $19.25 and minutes $23.84, closer to half and half. Slow traffic hurts per-mile pay but not per-minute pay.
By pickup borough
Brooklyn and the Bronx have the lowest pay per trip because trips there are short. Per engaged hour, Staten Island pickups paid the most ($68.28). Remember: none of this counts the wait for the next trip, which can differ a lot by area.
Trips that leave the city
11.4 million trips (4.5%) ended outside New York City (zone 265). Their median driver pay was $43.41 for a median 12.3 miles. Trips to Newark Airport (1.9 million) had a median of $56.33 for 16.4 miles. Under rule §59D-22, miles and minutes outside the city pay the out-of-town rates — $1.757 a mile (non-WAV) or $2.193 (WAV) and $0.725 a minute as of March 1, 2026 (TLC) — because, as TLC put it in 2018, drivers "spend greater time without a passenger while returning to New York City."
How close is pay to TLC's minimum?
For each in-city, non-WAV, non-shared trip from March to August 2026, we computed TLC's minimum: miles × $1.283 + minutes × $0.681 (rates already include utilization). Then we divided actual driver_pay by it.
In plain words: on the typical trip the companies pay exactly the TLC floor. Before March 2026 the ratio sits at 0.969 against today's rates — which is 1 ÷ 1.0336, the old rates. Only about a quarter of trips paid noticeably more; the data does not say why. Roughly 0.3% of trips showed pay more than 1% below our formula; that small group can come from rounding, data errors or adjustments, so it is not proof of underpayment. If you think a trip underpaid you, check it with the minimum pay estimator and see minimum pay rules.
Tips and tolls are separate
Tips averaged $1.27 per trip (about 20% of trips had a tip) — see app tipping data. Tolls sit in their own column and are not in driver_pay; see tolls on app trips.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an average Uber or Lyft trip pay the driver in NYC?
In TLC trip records for September 2025 – August 2026, the median app trip paid the driver $15.83 and the average $21.20, before tips. Tips averaged $1.27 per trip on top.
How much do drivers get per mile and per minute?
Across all clean trips, total driver pay divided by total trip miles was $4.32 a mile, and by total trip minutes $1.07 a minute. These are per passenger mile and minute; empty miles and waiting time earn nothing directly.
Do Uber and Lyft pay more than the TLC minimum?
On most trips, no. For in-city, non-WAV, non-shared trips from March to August 2026, driver pay was within 1% of TLC's minimum formula ($1.283 a mile + $0.681 a minute) on 75% of trips, and more than 1% above it on about 25%.
Do trips that end outside NYC pay more?
Yes. Trips ending outside the city (4.5% of app trips) had a median pay of $43.41 for a median 12.3 miles, and trips to Newark Airport $56.33. TLC's out-of-town rate is $1.757 a mile (non-WAV) for the miles outside the city.

No. TLC's dictionary defines driver_pay as total driver pay 'not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes.' Tips and tolls are separate columns.
