Trip record data is the set of files where TLC publishes every completed trip made by a TLC-licensed vehicle, one row per trip. TLC releases the files monthly on its Trip Record Data page, "typically with a two-month delay." On October 12, 2026 the newest month was August 2026.

There are four types: yellow taxi (from 2009), green taxi (from August 2013), FHV (black car, livery and luxury limousine bases) and high-volume FHV — Uber and Lyft, in a separate, more detailed file since February 2019. Each row has pickup and drop-off times and taxi zone numbers. Yellow, green and high-volume rows also have miles and money fields; the Uber/Lyft file even has driver_pay.

The current number

In the latest 12 months (September 2025 – August 2026), the yellow, green and high-volume files held about 298 million trips: 251.9 million app trips, 45.7 million yellow and 0.5 million green, by our count. These files are the source for TLC Help's trip statistics.

You don't need to open the large files to use this data. NYC Open Data has a ready summary, Pickups and Drop-offs by Taxi Zone and Industry (c5iv-bn4s), built from the same records. The city says it was made for people "without the technical expertise to work with raw trip record data." It shows, month by month, how many trips start and end in each zone for yellow, green and app cars.

Where drivers meet the term

  1. Your trips become records

In a taxi, the meter's technology system sends each trip to TLC. In an FHV, your base or app company reports the trip.

  2. Bases must report on time

Rule 59B-19(a) requires bases to submit trip records; late or incomplete records can bring a base a summons.

  3. TLC publishes them without names

The public files leave out driver and vehicle license numbers.

  4. The data shapes policy

TLC uses trip data in its reports on pay, wait times and licensing, such as the FHV License Review.

  • Taxi zone: one of TLC's numbered areas used for pickup and drop-off locations (LocationID).
  • driver_pay: in the high-volume file, pay "not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes."
  • Industry indicators: TLC's monthly summary table (trips, drivers, hours) built from trip records.

How to download and read the files step by step: how to use TLC trip record data. What the data shows: taxi and Uber trip statistics, yellow fare per trip, fare components, taxi vs Uber fares, trip lengths and busiest hours. Base reporting rule: 59B-19(a). Hub: money.

Frequently asked questions

What is TLC trip record data?

Files TLC publishes every month with one row per completed trip by a licensed vehicle: yellow taxi, green cab, FHV, and high-volume FHV (Uber and Lyft). Each row has times, pickup and drop-off taxi zones and, for most types, distance and money fields.

Who creates the records?

Taxi and green cab records come from the technology providers that run the meters; FHV records are submitted by the base that dispatched the trip. TLC says it cannot guarantee their accuracy.

Do the files show who drove?

No. Published trip files have no driver or vehicle license numbers, so they show trips, not individual drivers.
