In short: In 2025, TLC-licensed vehicles averaged about 872,600 trips a day across six industries. Roughly three in four were app-based trips (Uber and Lyft, licensed by TLC as High-Volume For-Hire Services). Yellow taxis made about 131,100 trips a day, around a quarter of their 2012 level. Total trips are still about 13% below 2019. Outside Manhattan, almost every trip in these numbers is an app trip.

All figures come from TLC's own data on NYC Open Data. The industry indicators are monthly figures TLC tabulates from trip records; we averaged the 12 months of each year.

Yellow taxi trips peaked in this series at about 488,000 a day in 2012. They fell every year from 2013 to 2020, bottoming out at 67,747 a day in 2020. Since then they have nearly doubled, to 131,133 in 2025, but remain far below their peak. Active yellow taxi drivers recovered in a similar way; see TLC driver statistics and our yellow taxi driver hub.

Source: NYC Open Data: Pickups and Drop-offs by Taxi Zone and Industry (c5iv-bn4s) · Data as of Oct 12, 2026. Counts come from trip records filed by app companies (high-volume FHVs) and taxi technology providers. Black car, livery and luxury limo trips that are not high-volume are not included. Queens includes JFK and LaGuardia airport pickups.

  • Manhattan had about 132 million pickups in these three industries in 2025, about 31% of them by yellow taxi. About 87% of all yellow taxi pickups were in Manhattan.
  • Brooklyn had about 67 million, Queens about 58 million and the Bronx about 32 million. More than 9 in 10 of those were app-based.
  • Staten Island had about 3.8 million, nearly all app-based.

Queens includes both airports. For airport detail see NYC airport trip statistics.

Trips versus drivers

Comparing trips with active drivers gives a rough sense of how busy each industry is. In 2025 yellow taxis averaged about 131,100 trips a day with about 13,300 drivers active in an average month. App companies averaged about 667,500 trips a day with about 83,300 drivers active in a month. Livery had about 40,300 trips a day and 9,600 active drivers. These are not per-shift numbers, because a driver active in a month may work only a few days. Treat them as context, not as a measure of any one driver's workload. Active-driver figures and their limits are on TLC driver statistics.

Why this matters for drivers

More app trips means more drivers working under FHV rules: prearranged trips only, the FHV license display rule, and the base and vehicle requirements that come with them. That mix shows up in the summons data too. See most common TLC violations. Pay rules for app drivers are covered in FHV driver minimum pay, and congestion charges in congestion pricing for TLC drivers.

What this data can and cannot tell you

It can tell you how many trips each TLC industry carries per day, how that has changed since 2010, how long trips last, and where taxi and app pickups happen.

It cannot tell you:

  • Driver earnings or fares. None of these charts show pay.
  • Trips for every industry by borough. Non-app black car, livery and luxury limo trips are not in the borough data.
  • Brand-level splits. "High-volume FHV" combines the licensed app companies.
  • Why trips changed. Prices, the pandemic, competition and policy all play a part, and the data doesn't separate them.
