No. The Port Authority does not charge a toll when you drive from New York into New Jersey over the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge or Outerbridge Crossing. You pay when you come back into New York: $14.79 off-peak or $16.79 at peak for a car with a New York or New Jersey E-ZPass (rates as of October 12, 2026). On a TLC trip to New Jersey, that return toll is the passenger's to pay.

Port Authority: one direction only

The Port Authority's own words: "Tolls are collected entering New York. No tolls are collected entering New Jersey" (Port Authority tolls). This covers all six of its crossings, and all of them charge the same price.

Which way you pay, by toll agency

MTA prices are for a New York E-ZPass and took effect January 4, 2026 (MTA). Turnpike prices are in the NJTA 2026 schedule; for example, Holland Tunnel exit 14C to Newark Airport exit 13A is $6.34 with E-ZPass. So a trip to New Jersey can still cost tolls on the way out: from Brooklyn over the Verrazzano to the Goethals, you pay the Verrazzano going, and the Goethals and Verrazzano coming back.

The TLC rule: tolls to and from

Because the Port Authority toll is collected only toward New York, on a TLC trip to New Jersey it is paid after the passenger gets out. TLC rules cover this. On any trip beyond New York City, "the passenger must pay all necessary tolls to and from the destination" (§58-26(f)(2) for taxis; §59A-23(b)(2) for FHVs).

  • Yellow taxi or green cab to Newark Airport: meter + $20.00 surcharge + tolls to and from the airport. Explain this before you start (§80-17(f)(3)).
  • Yellow taxi or green cab to any other New Jersey address: a flat rate agreed before the trip, plus tolls to and from (§80-17(f)(1); §58-26(f)(2)).
  • Livery, black car and other FHVs: tolls to and from the destination (§59A-23(b)(2)).
  • Uber and Lyft: the company must repay tolls you paid during the dispatched trip (§59D-17(c)). The Port Authority return toll comes after the trip ends, and TLC rules don't say how it is handled. Check your app's toll policy.
