Short answer: In 2025, 76.5% of all trips in TLC-licensed vehicles were Uber and Lyft trips. Yellow taxis had 15.0%, livery car services 4.6%, non-app black cars 3.5%, and green cabs and limousines the last 0.3%. These shares come from the average trips per day in TLC's industry indicators.
Uber alone was roughly 55% of all TLC trips. That figure is our estimate, explained below.
The number(s) and source
Here is how each sector's trips per day changed from 2015 to 2025:
How the share moved, using the same data:
| Year | Uber + Lyft (app) | Yellow taxi | Livery | Black car (non-app) | Green cab |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 18.2% | 63.9% | 7.4% | 1.6% | 8.4% |
| 2019 | 69.9% | 23.0% | 3.9% | 1.5% | 1.5% |
| 2024 | 79.7% | 13.5% | 3.5% | 2.9% | 0.2% |
| 2025 | 76.5% | 15.0% | 4.6% | 3.5% | 0.2% |
The app share peaked at 80.7% in 2023, then slipped to 79.7% in 2024 and 76.5% in 2025. App trips still rose in 2025, but only by 2.0% (from 654,410 to 667,537 a day). The other sectors grew much faster in percentage terms:
- Yellow taxis: +17.9%, from 111,257 to 131,133 trips a day.
- Livery: +38.3%, from 29,126 to 40,273.
- Non-app black cars: +29.9%, from 23,783 to 30,886.
- Green cabs: −11.7%, from 1,792 to 1,582.
The data does not say why. It only shows the change. Check the 2026 monthly numbers before calling it a long-term trend.
How we got "Uber alone ≈ 55%". TLC's base report shows 176.0 million Uber trips and 67.6 million Lyft trips in 2025, so Uber had 72.2% of app trips. 72.2% of the 76.5% app share is about 55%. Our own count from TLC trip records for September 2025 to August 2026 gives the same 72.2% Uber share (dataset trips-app-trips-by-company).
What the number does and doesn't mean
- Trips, not riders or money. A share of trips is not a share of fares or driver income. App trips and taxi trips differ in length and price.
- Share of trips is not share of cars. In 2025 a yellow taxi on the road made about 15.0 trips a day (131,133 trips ÷ 8,723 cabs working per day), while an app car made about 11.4 (667,537 ÷ 58,812). Both figures come from TLC's indicators; see how many Ubers and taxis are on the road each day.
- TLC vehicles only. The subway, buses, private cars, bikes and out-of-town car services are not in it.
- Some sectors self-report. Black car and livery numbers come from records that bases submit, and TLC cannot fully confirm them.
- Yearly values are averages of 12 monthly TLC figures. A single month can look different.
- Not the same everywhere. Taxis do much better in parts of Manhattan and at airports than citywide. See yellow vs app share by zone.
