In short: Uber is about 2.6 times Lyft's size in New York City. In TLC's FHV Base Aggregate Report, Uber dispatched 176.0 million trips in 2025 and Lyft 67.6 million: a 72.2% / 27.8% split. TLC's trip records for September 2025 – August 2026 give the same 72.2% for Uber. The split has barely moved since 2020, after Juno (2019) and Via (2021) stopped appearing in the data.
We added up the monthly rows TLC publishes for the bases named UBER, LYFT, VIA and JUNO on NYC Open Data, as of October 12, 2026.

Shares are of the companies listed for that year. 2019 is the busiest year in this series; 2025 total app trips (243.6 million) were still about 5% below 2019's 257.8 million across all four companies.
Via and Juno in the data
- Juno first appears in March 2016 and its last month with trips is November 2019. Its peak year was 2018 (13.8 million trips).
- Via appears from April 2015. Its trips fell sharply in 2020 and its last month is October 2021.
- TLC's 2025 Annual Report says TLC licenses two High-Volume For-Hire Services, Lyft and Uber. A high-volume license is for bases that dispatch more than 10,000 trips a day.
The last 12 months, from trip records
TLC's trip files mark each app trip with a company license number: HV0003 = Uber, HV0005 = Lyft (data dictionary). From September 2025 to August 2026, Uber averaged about 498,100 trips a day and Lyft about 192,000, a 72.2% Uber share. Uber's monthly share ranged from 69.4% (May 2026) to 73.4% (June 2026).
Apps in the whole market
App trips are about three in four of all TLC trips. TLC's industry indicators show 667,537 app trips a day in 2025, against 131,133 yellow taxi trips.
Two apps, one car
Vehicles overlap between the apps. In May 2026, 77,541 vehicles made Uber trips and 54,380 made Lyft trips. Added together that is about 131,900. But TLC's annual report counted only 82,225 for-hire vehicles affiliated with high-volume services at the end of 2025. The gap means many cars work for both companies, often in the same week. So "Lyft drivers" and "Uber drivers" are not separate groups. For driver counts, see how many Uber and Lyft drivers are in NYC.
What a bigger share means for you as a driver: more requests on one app does not by itself mean higher pay. TLC's minimum per-trip pay rule applies to both companies the same way. Our trip-record totals show driver pay of $21.64 per trip on Uber and $20.04 on Lyft over the same 12 months, partly because Uber trips were slightly longer on average. See does Uber or Lyft pay more in NYC?.
If you run both apps, keep each company's pay statements separately. Each company must meet the minimum on its own trips, and sick leave from the Attorney General's settlements is tracked by each company in its own app.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber or Lyft bigger in NYC?
Uber. In TLC's FHV Base Aggregate Report, Uber dispatched 176.0 million NYC trips in 2025 and Lyft 67.6 million, so Uber had 72.2% of the two companies' trips and Lyft 27.8%. January–May 2026 was almost the same: 71.8% Uber, 28.2% Lyft.
Has Lyft gained share?
Yes, slowly over the long run. Lyft had 22.5% of app trips in 2019 (with Via and Juno still operating) and has been about 25% to 28% of Uber + Lyft trips each year since 2020 (lowest 25.2% in 2024, highest 28.1% in 2023).
What happened to Via and Juno?
In TLC's base data, Juno's last month with trips is November 2019 and Via's is October 2021. TLC's 2025 Annual Report says only two High-Volume For-Hire Services are licensed now: Lyft and Uber.
Can I drive for both Uber and Lyft?
Many cars do. In May 2026, 77,541 different vehicles made Uber trips and 54,380 made Lyft trips. Together that is about 131,900, far more than the 82,225 vehicles TLC listed as affiliated with high-volume services at the end of 2025, so many vehicles must work both apps.
How current is this data?
TLC's base report runs about two months behind. When we checked on October 12, 2026, the latest month was May 2026. The trip-record files run to August 2026.
