Your name is on the list because TLC's rules require TLC to publish one. Rules 59A-11(b)(2) and 59B-11(c)(2) say the Commission "will post on its website a list of Drivers holding Valid TLC Driver Licenses." Bases and vehicle owners are not allowed to dispatch a driver without a valid license, and the list is how they check. On October 12, 2026, the list on NYC Open Data had 180,621 drivers. Each row shows a name, license number, license type, expiration date and whether the driver is WAV-trained, nothing more.

Why the list exists

The same two rules that order the list also put the duty on the people who dispatch you (chapter 59):

  • Vehicle owners must not let their vehicle be dispatched unless the driver has a valid TLC Driver License (rule 59A-11(b)): $350 fine and 1 penalty point on the vehicle license.
  • Base owners must not dispatch any vehicle unless the driver has a valid TLC Driver License (rule 59B-11(c)): $500 for a first violation in 12 months and $800 for each one after.

A fleet renting you a car or a base adding you to its app can look you up in seconds. The list protects passengers and also protects you: a driver who is not on it should not be getting dispatches.

What the list shows, and what it doesn't

The dataset is "For Hire Vehicles (FHV) – Active Drivers" (xjfq-wh2d). Its description says it lists "NYC TLC Licensed FHV drivers that are currently active and in good standing and able to drive," that it is updated daily between 4 and 7 PM, and that questions go to licensinginquiries@tlc.nyc.gov.

TLC links the same kind of list for medallion drivers, street hail livery drivers, and commuter van and paratransit drivers from its appointment scheduling page. When our data team checked on October 12, 2026, the FHV and medallion driver lists each had 180,621 rows, and spot checks found the same license numbers in each. That fits the fact that one TLC Driver License covers taxi, green cab and FHV work.

Being on the list means your license is valid, not that you are working. Many licensed drivers don't drive in a given month, and one driver can work in several industries, so the industry counts overlap and can't be added. The full breakdown is in TLC active drivers statistics. When licenses on the list come up for renewal is in TLC driver license expirations.

What to do next

You are not on the list but should be. Check the list's update date first. A change made today may only appear after the next 4–7 PM update. Then check your status in TLC UP. A suspended or expired license is not "in good standing," so it would not be listed. How to search the list is in check a TLC driver, car or base in Open Data.

Your name is spelled wrong or differs from your other documents. The list shows what TLC has on file. See my name is different on my documents for the name-change process.

Someone is driving under your license number. Because the number is public, guard your physical card and your app accounts. See someone is using my TLC license.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my name on a public TLC list?

TLC's rules say the Commission will post on its website a list of drivers holding valid TLC Driver Licenses (rules 59A-11(b)(2) and 59B-11(c)(2)). Bases and vehicle owners must not dispatch a driver without a valid license, and the list lets them check.

What does the TLC active driver list show about me?

On NYC Open Data (dataset xjfq-wh2d), each row shows a license number, name, license type, expiration date, whether the driver is wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) trained, and when the list was last updated. It does not show your address, phone, date of birth, summonses or trips.

Why did my name disappear from the list?

The dataset says it lists drivers who are currently active, in good standing and able to drive. An expired, suspended or revoked license would not be in good standing. Check your status in TLC UP. The list is also updated daily between 4 and 7 PM, so a same-day change may not show yet.

Can I remove my name from the TLC list?

We found no opt-out on TLC's pages. The rules require TLC to post the list of valid drivers. For questions about the dataset, TLC says to email licensinginquiries@tlc.nyc.gov.

My details on the list are wrong. What do I do?

First check the dataset's 'Last Updated' date and your record in TLC UP. If your license is valid but missing or wrong after the next daily update, email licensinginquiries@tlc.nyc.gov with your license number, which the dataset names as the contact for questions.
