397 Lexus GXs held TLC licenses on October 12, 2026, all as for-hire vehicles (FHVs). It ranks 36th among TLC models and is the third most common Lexus, after the TX and RX.
The GX has one of the most bunched-up age profiles among models ranked 21st to 40th (only the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Equinox are more concentrated in their top two years). Seven in ten TLC GXs are model-year 2022 or 2023, and only 13 are newer. It also ties for the lowest EPA fuel economy among the models ranked 21st to 40th that we looked up: the 2023 GX 460 is rated 16 mpg combined, on premium fuel, the same as some GMC Yukon XL versions. That makes your fuel and tax records especially important.
Where the numbers come from
There is no model column in TLC's FHV list or medallion list. We decoded every VIN with NHTSA's vPIC, which reports the family name "GX". The counts are for one day.
Model years: two years hold most of the fleet
165 GXs are 2023 models and 118 are 2022. 2021 adds 45 and 2020 adds 22. After 2023 the count almost stops: 4 for 2024, 7 for 2025, 2 for 2026. Only 3.3% are 2024 or newer, against about 31% of all FHVs, and only 6 are 2016 or older.
When most of a model's fleet is the same age, those cars reach TLC's age limits around the same time. Check the dates for your car in TLC vehicle retirement age, and plan the next car early.
Fuel: gas only, and thirsty
fueleconomy.gov rates the 2023 GX 460, with a 4.6-liter V8, at 16 mpg combined (15 city, 19 highway), and lists premium fuel. At 15 mpg in the city, 100 miles of city driving uses almost 7 gallons. Put your own numbers in the lease-vs-buy tool or the EV savings tool to see the gap against a hybrid or EV.
Mileage deduction basics for a high-fuel car
How you deduct car costs can matter more for a car like this. These are IRS rules, not TLC rules, and this is not tax advice:
- The IRS standard mileage rate is 76 cents per business mile for July 1–December 31, 2026, and 72.5 cents for January 1–June 30, 2026 (rates as of 2026-10-12).
- Instead, you can deduct actual expenses — gas, oil, repairs, tires, insurance, registration, licenses and depreciation or lease payments — times your business-use share of miles.
- For a car you own, you must choose the standard rate in the first year the car is used for business if you want to use it at all; later you can switch between methods. For a leased car, once you claim actual expenses you can't switch to the standard rate.
- Tolls and business parking are deductible separately under either method.
Try both methods in the tax deduction estimator, then check with a tax professional.
Base types and plates
391 (98.5%) are at black car bases, 5 at livery and 1 at a luxury limousine base. New FHV licenses are only for approved wheelchair accessible vehicles (TLC); the GX isn't one, so you need an existing license and a vehicle transfer, filed within 15 days of DMV registration (rule 59A-09(a), chapter 59). See TLC plates for FHVs and TLC vehicle inspection.

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
TLC's vehicle lists have no make/model column, so TLC Help decoded the VIN of every licensed vehicle with NHTSA's vPIC decoder (one representative VIN per manufacturer + model-descriptor + model-year pattern) and published only counts. 5 of 115,081 vehicles (0%) could not be decoded to a model and are left out. vPIC sometimes reports trim-family names (e.g. 'RX' not 'RX 350h'); powertrain comes from vPIC's electrification/fuel fields and may misclassify a few model years. Snapshot lists change daily.

Frequently asked questions
How many Lexus GXs are licensed by the TLC?
397 on October 12, 2026, all for-hire vehicles and 0.34% of all TLC vehicles. TLC Help counted them by decoding each VIN with NHTSA's vPIC decoder.
Why are most TLC Lexus GXs 2022 or 2023 models?
283 of 397 (71.3%) are 2022 or 2023 models, while 2024–2026 add only 13. The data shows the pattern but not the reason.
What fuel economy does the GX 460 get?
For 2023, fueleconomy.gov rates the GX 460 (4.6-liter V8) at 16 mpg combined, 15 city and 19 highway, on premium fuel.
Should I take the IRS standard mileage rate or actual expenses for a GX?
It depends on your numbers, and this is not tax advice. The IRS rate is 76 cents a mile for July–December 2026 (72.5 cents for January–June). For a car you own, you must choose the standard rate in the first year you use the car for business to keep that option later. Ask a tax professional.
