Astoria Park (TLC zone 8) is one of the quietest zones in Queens: about 32 pickups a day, 65th of the 67 Queens zones outside the airports. But it is strongly seasonal. Summer months had more than three times the pickups of February, and an average Saturday is about 1.8 times as busy as a weekday. The top destinations are Astoria and Steinway, with about three trips in ten between them.

Numbers below are from TLC trip records for yellow taxis, green cabs and high-volume app services (Uber, Lyft), September 2025 to August 2026, totaled by TLC Help. Because the counts are small, a few busy days can move a month a lot.

'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Medians/rates need ≥250 trips (else null). labels are LocationIDs as strings; zones[] has names, boroughs, service_zone (from taxi_zone_lookup.csv), suggested slugs and neighbouring zone ids (shared boundary, from taxi_zones.zip).

Weekend afternoons, weekday evenings

An average weekday has about 27 pickups; a Saturday about 48 and a Sunday about 42. On weekends pickups are highest from about 3 to 6 p.m. (several hours tie). On weekdays, rides cluster later, peaking around 7 p.m. Almost a third of the week's pickups (30.4%) start between 4 and 8 p.m., and only 5.6% start between midnight and 5 a.m.

Even at the peak, the hourly averages are small (about 4 pickups at 3 p.m. on a Saturday). Treat the shape, not the exact numbers, as the useful part.

Fares and pay

The median app trip is 2.94 miles and 14.9 minutes with a $17.16 fare and $14.23 driver pay. Pay per engaged hour, $59.96, is in the bottom ten of Queens (60th of 67). Trips here are slow for their length: 2.94 miles takes about 15 minutes. Engaged hours count only time with a passenger, so they are not hourly earnings.

Yellow taxis made 599 pickups, 5.1% of the total, a high share for Queens. 16% of those yellow trips paid the MTA Congestion Relief Zone fee, so some of them head into Manhattan below 60th Street.

Rules and the RFK Bridge
