818 GMC Yukon XLs held TLC licenses on October 12, 2026. All are for-hire vehicles (FHVs); there are no Yukon XL yellow taxis. It ranks 21st among TLC models and is the third most common extended-length SUV, after the Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade ESV.
Two things stand out in the data. Among the 60 most common TLC models, only three have diesel versions on plates: the Suburban, the Escalade ESV and the Yukon XL (20 cars). And it leans toward luxury work: 6.1% are at luxury limousine bases, against 1.3% of all FHVs.
Where the numbers come from
Neither TLC's active FHV list nor its medallion vehicle list has a make or model column. TLC Help ran every VIN through NHTSA's vPIC decoder and counted the results. vPIC reports the model family ("Yukon XL"), not the trim, so Denali and other trims are counted together. The lists change every day.
Model years: a 2023 peak
Model-year 2023 is the largest group by far: 219 cars, about 27% of all TLC Yukon XLs. 2022 has 128, and 2024, 2025 and 2026 each have between 86 and 96. Only 36 (4.4%) are model-year 2016 or older, compared with about 10% of all FHVs (dataset tlc-vehicle-model-years). How long a car may stay licensed is set by TLC rules, not by this chart: see TLC vehicle retirement age.
Gas and diesel, and what EPA says about fuel use
798 decode as gas and 20 as diesel. For the 2023 model year, the federal fueleconomy.gov rating for the 2WD 5.3-liter gas Yukon XL is 17 mpg combined (15 city, 20 highway). The 2WD 3.0-liter diesel is rated 23 mpg combined (21 city, 27 highway). The 6.2-liter gas engine is rated 16 mpg combined and EPA lists premium fuel for it. Stop-and-go city driving can give different results, so use your own fill-up numbers in the lease-vs-buy tool.
Base types
752 (91.9%) are at black car bases, where app trips are dispatched. 50 are at luxury limousine bases and 16 at livery bases. None are marked wheelchair accessible.
Seats decide your insurance and inspection
A big SUV can land in a different rule tier than a sedan. Check these before you buy or rent:
- Insurance. Rule 59A-12(c) sets minimums for FHVs that seat fewer than 8 passengers (not counting the driver), a higher minimum for 8 to 15 passengers, and its own amounts for luxury limousines seating fewer than 8. Give your broker the exact seat count and base type. Amounts: FHV insurance requirements.
- Inspection. TLC's inspections page says vehicles seating 10 or more need a NYS DOT inspection and MC-300 sticker before TLC's visual inspection. See TLC vehicle inspection.
- Plates. New FHV licenses go only to approved wheelchair accessible vehicles, and no GMC is on TLC's approved list. With an existing license, file a vehicle transfer within 15 days of registering the new car (rule 59A-09(a)); see TLC plates for FHVs.
The Yukon XL has a smaller share of 2024-or-newer cars than any other model in this table. Compare the Chevrolet Suburban, Lincoln Navigator L, Ford Expedition MAX, or mid-size options like the Lincoln Aviator, Infiniti QX60 and Honda Pilot. The full ranking is in TLC fleet by make and model.

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
TLC's vehicle lists have no make/model column, so TLC Help decoded the VIN of every licensed vehicle with NHTSA's vPIC decoder (one representative VIN per manufacturer + model-descriptor + model-year pattern) and published only counts. 5 of 115,081 vehicles (0%) could not be decoded to a model and are left out. vPIC sometimes reports trim-family names (e.g. 'RX' not 'RX 350h'); powertrain comes from vPIC's electrification/fuel fields and may misclassify a few model years. Snapshot lists change daily.

Frequently asked questions
How many GMC Yukon XLs are licensed by the TLC?
818 on October 12, 2026, all for-hire vehicles (FHVs) and none yellow taxis. That is 0.71% of all TLC vehicles, the 21st most common model. TLC Help counted them by decoding each VIN with NHTSA's vPIC decoder.
Are there diesel Yukon XLs on TLC plates?
Yes. 20 decode as diesel and 798 as gas. None decode as hybrid or electric.
Does a Yukon XL need a higher insurance level?
It can. TLC rule 59A-12(c) sets one minimum for FHVs seating fewer than 8 passengers (not counting the driver), a higher one for 8 to 15, and a separate one for luxury limousines. Tell your broker exactly how your Yukon XL is seated and which kind of base it is with.
Can I get new TLC plates for a Yukon XL?
No. New FHV licenses are only issued for approved wheelchair accessible vehicles, and the Yukon XL is not on TLC's approved list (revised October 2, 2026). You can move an existing FHV license onto one with a vehicle transfer.
