666 Chevrolet Traverses held TLC licenses on October 12, 2026, all as for-hire vehicles (FHVs). 28 of them are marked "WAV" (wheelchair accessible vehicle) in TLC's FHV list.
That matters because the Traverse is the only SUV on TLC's approved accessible vehicle list. Every other vehicle on that list is a minivan or a small van. So an accessible Traverse is one of the few ways to get a new FHV license today, and a regular Traverse is not.
How we counted
The model comes from decoding each VIN in TLC's FHV list and medallion list with NHTSA's vPIC. The WAV count comes from TLC's own wheelchair_accessible column. vPIC names the base model, so it cannot tell a factory Traverse from a converted one; only TLC's flag does that.
The accessible Traverse on TLC's list
The list revised October 2, 2026 has one Traverse entry: Chevrolet Traverse Accessible Rear Entry, model years 2024–2026, "Yellow Taxi and FHV Conversion" by Freedom Motors. Since July 20, 2024, FHV accessible vehicles must come from that list. TLC's new FHV license page says only owners of wheelchair accessible vehicles may apply for a new FHV license, and that those licenses are restricted to accessible vehicles: if you replace the car later, the new one must also be accessible.
Because the conversion is approved for yellow taxis too, it is also a possible hack-up vehicle. Since October 18, 2024, every taxi hack-up must be an accessible vehicle (TLC hack-up page). No Traverses are yellow taxis today.
Before you buy, confirm the exact model year and converter match the list, and keep the modifier's paperwork. Rule 59A-28(a) in chapter 59 bans after-market changes to a vehicle's body or seating except under approved programs. Rule 59C-04 also lists what any accessible FHV must meet. A few points worth checking on a used accessible Traverse:
- the converted vehicle must be bought from the same converter that made the parts and did the work (59C-04(c)(16));
- a vehicle with a salvage title may not be converted (59C-04(c)(17));
- the wheelchair securement system must be Q'Straint QRT Standard or equal, and the stowed ramp must not block the driver's rear view (59C-04(c)(9)–(10));
- a back-up alarm must sound when the car is in reverse (59C-04(c)(15)).
Step by step: get a new FHV license with a WAV, approved wheelchair accessible vehicles and WAV training.
Model years
Model-year 2022 dominates with 382 cars. No other year has more than 52. Only 111 (16.7%) are 2024 or newer, the years the accessible conversion covers. Age limits are in TLC vehicle retirement age.
Powertrain
Every TLC Traverse decodes as gas. For the 2022 model year, fueleconomy.gov rates the FWD 3.6-liter V6 at 21 mpg combined (18 city, 27 highway) and the AWD at 20.
Base types
658 (98.8%) are at black car bases, 6 at livery and 2 at luxury limousine bases. Bases have their own accessible-trip duties; see the base WAV trip mandate.

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
TLC's vehicle lists have no make/model column, so TLC Help decoded the VIN of every licensed vehicle with NHTSA's vPIC decoder (one representative VIN per manufacturer + model-descriptor + model-year pattern) and published only counts. 5 of 115,081 vehicles (0%) could not be decoded to a model and are left out. vPIC sometimes reports trim-family names (e.g. 'RX' not 'RX 350h'); powertrain comes from vPIC's electrification/fuel fields and may misclassify a few model years. Snapshot lists change daily.

Frequently asked questions
How many Chevrolet Traverses are licensed by the TLC?
666 on October 12, 2026, all for-hire vehicles and 0.58% of all TLC vehicles. 28 of them are marked WAV (wheelchair accessible) in TLC's FHV list. TLC Help counted them by decoding each VIN with NHTSA's vPIC decoder.
Can I get a new FHV license with a Chevrolet Traverse?
Only with an accessible conversion that is on TLC's approved list. The list revised October 2, 2026 includes the Chevrolet Traverse Accessible Rear Entry, model years 2024–2026, Yellow Taxi and FHV Conversion by Freedom Motors. A regular Traverse does not qualify.
If I get a license with an accessible Traverse, can I later switch to a regular SUV?
No. TLC says licenses issued under the wheelchair accessible vehicle exception are restricted to accessible vehicles, so any replacement must also be accessible.
Why are so many TLC Traverses model-year 2022?
382 of the 666 (57%) are 2022 models. The data shows the pattern but not the reason.
