Clinton West (TLC zone 50) is the far-west strip of Hell's Kitchen and Midtown along the Hudson. It is an app-heavy zone with a lot of driver relief space. Over the 12 months to August 2026, TLC trip records show 1,565,469 pickups here, about 4,289 a day. Yellow taxis had only 20.7% of pickups. Weekday mornings and weekend late nights are the busy times. DOT lists seven relief stands with 34 spaces inside the zone.
Clinton West at a glance
Zone 50 runs roughly from the low 40s to 59th Street, west of Clinton East. On TLC's zone map its neighbours are Clinton East (48), West Chelsea/Hudson Yards (246), Lincoln Square West (143) and Lincoln Square East (142). Despite TLC's "Yellow Zone" tag for it, only about one pickup in five here is a yellow cab; the tag sorts trip data and is not a rule.
When rides start: early mornings and late weekends
On weekdays the biggest hours are 8 a.m. (about 313 pickups) and 9 a.m. (about 305). Evenings are smaller: the 4–6 p.m. hours average about 675 pickups together, against about 833 in the 7–9 a.m. hours.
Weekends turn the pattern around. Saturday pickups build to 7 p.m. and stay high until late; 11 p.m. is the third-busiest Saturday hour. On Sundays the busiest hour is midnight (about 290 pickups), and 23.9% of Sunday pickups happen between midnight and 5 a.m. Saturday drop-offs peak at 11 p.m.
A zone that did not slow down in summer
Many Manhattan zones were quietest in July and August 2026. Clinton West was not. Its quietest months were January and February 2026 (118,416 and 114,632 pickups). July 2026 (136,788) was one of its busiest months. October 2025 was the top month (143,042). Yellow pickups were slightly higher in June–August 2026 than in September–November 2025.
Where trips go
The single most common destination is outside New York City (TLC zone 265): 4.8% of pickups. Close behind are West Chelsea/Hudson Yards (4.7%), East Chelsea (4.6%) and Times Square/Theatre District (4.4%). Trips spread widely: the top ten destinations take only 37.3% of pickups. Airports take 6.4% of app pickups, below the middle value for Manhattan's "Yellow Zone" zones (about 7.9%). Trips coming in start most often in Times Square/Theatre District (5.5% of drop-offs) and Clinton East (4.8%).
For a trip that ends outside New York State, the state congestion surcharge does not apply. The tax department says it covers only trips that begin and end in the state.
Fares and pay
The median yellow fare from here is $15.90 (1.98 miles, 13.7 minutes). That is higher than in most Midtown zones. The median app fare is $22.68, and the median app driver pay is $17.20 per trip, before tips and tolls. Card tips on yellow trips average 21.8% of the fare.
Congestion fee and hail lines
- MTA Congestion Relief Zone: every street in zone 50 is below 60th Street, so pickups here are inside the Congestion Relief Zone. The zone's western edge is the West Side Highway (Route 9A), which the MTA FAQ lists as an excluded road for vehicles that stay on it. Trips that start on Clinton West's streets are zone trips: 97.9% of app and 95.5% of yellow pickups were charged. As of 2026-10-12 the rider pays $1.50 per Uber or Lyft trip and $0.75 per taxi trip (rate card).
- NYS congestion surcharge: $2.50 in a medallion taxi and $2.75 in an FHV as of 2026-10-12, but only when the trip begins and ends in New York State. Some of the 4.8% of pickups that end outside New York City may also leave the state; those do not pay it.
- Hail Exclusionary Zone: Clinton West is in Manhattan below West 110th Street (Chapter 51), so green cabs may not take hails here. Its 119 green pickups in a year work out to about one every three days. An FHV street pickup carries the higher 80-19(c)(2) fines.
Relief stands and taxi stands
DOT's relief-stand dataset (updated October 1, 2026) puts seven stands in this zone. Six are taxi-only. One, on 11th Avenue between 45th and 46th Streets, is open to taxis and FHVs. Current DOT sign records also show taxi-stand signs on three blocks of 12th Avenue, posted Monday–Friday, 6 a.m.–5 p.m.
Six of the seven relief stands here are signed for taxis only, so an Uber or Lyft car may use only the 11th Avenue stand between 45th and 46th Streets. The limit is one hour (DOT), and the posted vehicle type is binding (80-19(d)(7)). The 12th Avenue taxi stands are posted for weekday daytime hours. See relief stand rules and the stand finder.

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Monthly cells with 1–9 trips are shown as blank (null). Pairs with fewer than 10 trips are not listed.
