Carroll Gardens at a glance (zone 40)
TLC's lookup table gives zone 40 the borough Brooklyn and the service-zone label "Boro Zone". That label is a data grouping, not a legal area. On the TLC map, the zone borders six others: Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Columbia Street, Gowanus, Red Hook and Sunset Park West.
When rides start and end here
Weekday pickups have a morning rise (17.5% start between 7 and 10 a.m.) and a peak at 6 p.m. (about 113). Saturday tops the week with about 2,360 pickups, peaking at 7 p.m. (about 164). Sunday's busiest hour is midnight.
Arrivals cluster in the early evening too. Weekday drop-offs peak at 6 p.m. (about 131), and 23.0% of them land between 5 and 8 p.m. Only Columbia Street and Williamsburg (North Side) have a bigger evening share in Brooklyn.
The monthly high was May 2026 (57,360 pickups) and the low September 2025 (48,036). July 2026 was also slow, at 49,252.
Where trips go
Park Slope takes 9.0% of pickups and Red Hook 7.5%. Then come Brooklyn Heights (5.1%), Boerum Hill (4.9%), Gowanus (3.0%) and Sunset Park West (2.9%). LaGuardia and JFK each take 2.8%, so airports are a real part of the work here. Red Hook is also the 2nd-biggest source of trips ending here (6.1%), after Park Slope (8.3%).
Yellow, green and app: who serves the zone
Pickups split into 613,952 app trips, 17,158 yellow and 351 green. Taxis mostly come here to drop off. Yellow taxis ended 41,346 trips here, 2.4 times their pickups, and green cabs ended 1,196, more than three times their pickups. Of the yellow pickups, 40.3% paid the Congestion Relief Zone charge, against 18.3% of app pickups. That charge applies to trips to or through Manhattan south of 60th Street and is paid by the rider, so a yellow trip from here was more than twice as likely as an app trip to touch that part of Manhattan.
Fares and driver pay
For app trips, the medians were 3.04 miles, 16.8 minutes and a $20.32 fare and $16.17 driver pay before tips and tolls. Add the $1.80 average tip. Yellow trips run longer, a median 5.09 miles, with a $28.14 fare, and card-paying yellow riders tipped 11.4%. App pay per engaged hour was $62.05, which counts only time with a rider on board.
Pickup rules and notes
Carroll Gardens lies in TLC's Hail Zone (Chapter 51). A yellow or green cab that drops off here may take the next hail on the street. App drivers may only take riders who booked through their base (80-19(c)(1)). When we checked DOT's relief-stand and sign data on 2026-10-12, zone 40 had no taxi stand or relief stand listed. Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Monthly cells with 1–9 trips are shown as blank (null). Pairs with fewer than 10 trips are not listed.
