City Island (TLC zone 46) is small but different from the rest of the Bronx. Only about 153 trips a day start here (55,780 in the 12 months to August 2026), so it ranks 41st of 43 Bronx zones. But the trips are long. The median app trip pays the driver $24.98, the highest of any Bronx zone. Business is seasonal: summer months had nearly twice as many pickups as winter, and evenings are the busy time.
The 55,780 pickups split into 54,947 app trips, 805 yellow taxi trips (about two a day) and 28 green cab trips. That is TLC Help's count from TLC's trip files, which do not include black car or livery rides booked outside Uber and Lyft.
City Island at a glance
City Island sits in Long Island Sound at the east edge of the Bronx. TLC's zone shapefile lists no neighboring zones for it, because it touches no other zone on land. In the data, its closest links are Pelham Bay (183), Pelham Bay Park (184) and Schuylerville/Edgewater Park (208). TLC's lookup table labels it a "Boro Zone"; that label has no legal meaning.
A summer and evening zone
The month chart tells the main story. Pickups fell from 4,423 in September 2025 to 3,292 in February 2026, then climbed to 6,156 in June 2026. June, July and August each had about 6,000. The busiest month had 1.87 times the pickups of the quietest. Among Bronx zones, only neighboring Pelham Bay Park swings more (2.3 times).
The day has a clear shape too. People arrive in the late afternoon and leave at night. On weekdays, 35% of drop-offs happen between 4 and 8 p.m. Pickups peak later, around 8 to 10 p.m. On Saturdays the busiest pickup hour is 10 p.m. (about 21 trips), and Saturdays average 219 pickups against 132 on a weekday. Mornings are very quiet: only 5.4% of Saturday pickups start between 6 and 10 a.m.
Where trips go: often out of the city
The top destination is outside New York City (TLC zone 265), with 12.9% of pickups. The trip records don't say where outside the city those trips ended. Next come Pelham Bay (5.1%), Schuylerville/Edgewater Park (5.0%) and Co-Op City (4.3%). Only 3.1% of trips stay on the island.
If you drive a yellow taxi or green cab, out-of-city trips have their own fare rules. A Westchester trip runs on the meter with the outside-the-city part doubled. Most other destinations outside the city need a flat price agreed before you start (80-17(f)(1)). The Bronx page explains both.
Fares and pay
The median app trip is 7.19 miles, 20.7 minutes and $28.78 in fare. Drivers' median pay is $24.98 per trip, and riders tip more than in most Bronx zones: 4.0% of the fare, or $1.41 a trip on average (4th-highest tip rate in the borough). 3.1% of app pickups went to an airport, tied for the highest share in the Bronx. Yellow trips are longer still: a median of 11.82 miles and $42.50 on the meter.
Rules and practical notes
- Hail Zone: City Island, like the whole Bronx, is in TLC's Hail Zone (Chapter 51). Green cabs may take hails here. App drivers may only take base-dispatched trips (80-19(c)(1)).
- No stands: DOT's relief-stand data (checked October 2026) shows no relief stand on City Island. The closest listed one is a 1-space taxi/FHV stand on Pelham Parkway South, nearly 3 miles away in a straight line.
- Low numbers: with about 2 yellow pickups a day and 28 green pickups in a year, many taxi cells are blank or rest on few trips.

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Monthly cells with 1–9 trips are shown as blank (null). Pairs with fewer than 10 trips are not listed.

Frequently asked questions
How many Uber and taxi trips start on City Island?
From September 2025 to August 2026, TLC trip records show 55,780 pickups in zone 46, about 153 a day. Only two Bronx zones had fewer. 54,947 of them were app trips, 805 were yellow taxi trips and 28 were green cab trips.
Is City Island busier in summer?
Yes, clearly. Pickups were lowest in January and February 2026 (about 3,300 a month) and highest in June 2026 (6,156). June to August each had about 6,000 pickups.
Why do trips from City Island pay more?
Because they are longer. The median app trip from here is 7.19 miles and 20.7 minutes, so the median driver pay is $24.98 per trip, before tips and tolls. That is the highest median of any Bronx zone in the data. 12.9% of trips end outside New York City.
How do I charge a taxi fare from City Island to Westchester?
For a yellow taxi or green cab, TLC rule 80-17(f)(2) says the meter records the whole trip, and the passenger pays the in-city amount plus twice the amount for the part outside the city, plus tolls. Tell the passenger before you start. Nassau County works the same way, and Newark Airport has its own rule. Most other trips outside the city need a flat price agreed before you start (80-17(f)(1)). App trips are priced by the app.
