Coney Island (TLC zone 55) mixes many short local trips with some of the longest taxi trips in Brooklyn. In the 12 months to August 2026, 760,642 trips started here, about 2,084 a day, and 25.4% stayed inside the zone. Yellow taxis picked up more riders here than in neighboring Brighton Beach and Gravesend combined, and their median fare of $39.93 is the highest in Brooklyn. Green cabs are active too.

All counts are TLC trip records for yellow taxis, green cabs and high-volume app services (Uber, Lyft), September 2025 to August 2026, added up by TLC Help. Black car and livery trips that are not high-volume are not included.

'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Month by month

Spring and summer 2026 were much busier than fall 2025. March 2026 was the top month (70,253 pickups), and every month from March to August 2026 had more than 64,000. September 2025 was the low (51,613), and September to November 2025 were all under 57,500. The data shows the rise but not the reason.

Yellow pickups climbed to 1,883 in May 2026, then fell to 283–334 a month from June to August, with no matching drop in app trips. The trip records do not explain that. Green cab pickups stayed between about 85 and 200 a month all year.

Curb signs and pickup rules

DOT's sign data shows "TAXI/FHV PICK-UP/DROP-OFF ONLY" signs on the east side of Stillwell Avenue between Mermaid and Neptune Avenues (nfid-uabd, checked October 12, 2026). These signs name both taxis and FHVs, and their text limits the curb to pick-up and drop-off. Another "TAXI/FHV 8AM-10PM ALL DAYS PICK-UP/DROP-OFF ONLY" sign is on Ocean Parkway at the Belt Parkway, where Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Gravesend meet. DOT lists no taxi stand and no relief stand in zone 55 (vqu8-xef9); for break spots, see taxi relief stands.

Coney Island is in TLC's Hail Zone: yellow and green cabs may take street hails. App drivers may pick up only riders their base dispatched, even at a TAXI/FHV curb (80-19(c)(1)). Riders going into Manhattan at or below 60th Street pay $1.50 per app trip or $0.75 per taxi trip as of 2026-10-12 (MTA). See who can pick up where. This is general information, not legal advice.
