Melrose South (TLC zone 159) is a morning destination. On an average weekday, about 343 trips end here in the 8 a.m. hour, more than in any other Bronx zone. Over the 12 months to August 2026 it had 1,198,911 pickups (about 3,285 a day) and even more drop-offs (1,238,594), ranking 8th of 43 Bronx zones. It has a taxi/FHV relief stand on Third Avenue, and its yellow taxi trips are the shortest in the borough.
Melrose South's pickups were 1,182,338 app trips, 15,970 yellow taxi trips (the 4th-most in the Bronx) and 603 green cab trips. TLC Help summed these from TLC's trip files, which leave out black car and livery trips not booked through a big app.
Melrose South at a glance
Zone 159 has four neighbors on TLC's map: East Concourse/Concourse Village (69), Longwood (147), Morrisania/Melrose (167) and Mott Haven/Port Morris (168). TLC's lookup table calls it a "Boro Zone"; that is a label for sorting data, not a legal boundary.
Arrivals in the morning, departures in the evening
On weekdays the morning belongs to drop-offs: about 289 at 7 a.m., 343 at 8 a.m. and 249 at 9 a.m. In those same hours only about 214, 235 and 169 trips start here. 29.5% of weekday drop-offs happen between 6 and 10 a.m.
Pickups have two weekday peaks: 8 a.m. (about 235) and 5 p.m. (about 216). Saturday pickups are spread through the afternoon and evening, with 3 p.m. (193) and 8 p.m. (192) on top. On Sundays the busiest pickup hour is midnight (153).
Month by month
March 2026 was the busiest month (114,001 pickups) and September 2025 the quietest (84,957). Yellow taxis did more business here than in most Bronx zones: 1,200 to 1,820 pickups a month until May 2026, then about 750 to 800 a month in the summer.
Where trips go
Mott Haven/Port Morris leads (9.7%), then trips inside the zone (8.1%), East Concourse/Concourse Village (6.1%) and Morrisania/Melrose (5.8%). Two Manhattan zones make the top ten: Central Harlem North (3.7%) and East Harlem North (2.7%). The incoming list is nearly the same, led by Mott Haven/Port Morris (9.6%).
Fares and pay
App trips are 2.22 miles and 14.8 minutes at the median, with a $15.23 fare and $13.52 median driver pay, right at the Bronx middle. Because the trips are slow, pay per engaged hour is only $58.19, second-lowest in the Bronx (it counts passenger time only). Yellow trips are short for the Bronx: a median of 4.3 miles and $24.50. 6.6% of yellow pickups and 3.6% of app pickups paid the MTA Congestion Relief Zone fee.
The Third Avenue relief stand
NYC DOT's dataset (vqu8-xef9, checked October 2026) lists one relief stand in zone 159: Third Avenue, west side, East 158th Street to East 157th Street, 2 spaces, taxi/FHV, 1 hour limit. Taxis and FHVs may both use it. You may leave the car for up to an hour (DOT), but must follow the sign (80-19(d)(7), $50). If it is full, the two taxi-only stands on Park Avenue between East 135th and East 138th Streets (Mott Haven, 20 spaces in total) are about 0.3 miles away, but FHVs may not use them. More: relief stands.
Pickup rules
Melrose South is in TLC's Hail Zone (Chapter 51), so yellow and green cabs may pick up street hails. For app drivers, every pickup must be dispatched through the base, even right next to the relief stand (80-19(c)(1)).

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Monthly cells with 1–9 trips are shown as blank (null). Pairs with fewer than 10 trips are not listed.
