Brownsville (TLC zone 35) is a busy, local, daytime zone. From September 2025 to August 2026, 1,573,816 trips started here (about 4,312 a day), 16th of 61 Brooklyn zones. The busiest hour is 8 a.m. on weekdays, and most trips are short rides inside Brownsville or to the zones around it. Riders tip less here than in any other Brooklyn zone. The zone also has one of the few taxi stands in Brooklyn's sign data.

All numbers come from TLC trip records for yellow, green and high-volume app (Uber, Lyft) trips, aggregated by TLC Help. Black car and livery trips that are not app-dispatched are missing.

'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. The East 98th Street taxi stand

DOT's sign data (checked October 12, 2026) shows a taxi stand on East 98th Street between Ralph Avenue and Sutter Avenue (nfid-uabd). DOT lists no relief stand in the zone. TLC's Chapter 80 sets the stand rules:

  • Yellow cabs may take any vacant position, and no one may interfere (80-19(d)(1)). Green cabs have the same right at stands in the Hail Zone, which includes all of Brooklyn (Chapter 51).
  • App and other for-hire drivers must not pick up at a taxi stand: $350 for a first violation, revocation for a third within 36 months (80-19(d)(2)).
  • Taxi and green cab drivers must not solicit or cruise for passengers within 100 feet of an authorized stand (80-19(a)(4)(ii)). Join the line at the rear (80-19(d)(4)), and the first two drivers must stay in their seats (80-19(d)(6)).

The sign on the street is what counts. See taxi stand rules and who can pick up where. This is general information, not legal advice.
