East New York (TLC zone 76) is a huge app market made of short, local trips. From September 2025 to August 2026, 3,006,883 trips started here (about 8,238 a day), 2nd in Brooklyn. Its 2,954,607 app pickups were the 4th-most of any zone in New York City, after LaGuardia, JFK and Crown Heights North. But 32.7% of trips end inside the zone, and the median app trip is barely over 2 miles.

The data covers yellow, green and high-volume app (Uber, Lyft) trips from TLC trip records, aggregated by TLC Help. Black car and livery trips not dispatched by an app are not included.

'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Pickups rose from 211,033 in September 2025 to a high of 284,751 in March 2026, then settled around 250,000 a month.

The yellow series broke in June 2026. Yellow pickups ran at 4,261 to 6,188 a month until May, then fell to 1,679 in June and 1,301 by August. App trips show no matching drop. The records do not explain it. TLC also added a new field to yellow trip files that month, so be careful drawing conclusions.

Short rides mean low pay per trip. The median app trip is 2.18 miles and 12.4 minutes, with a $13.69 fare (52nd of 61 in Brooklyn). The median driver pay is $11.49 before tips and tolls. Recorded tips are small: 1.2% of fares, $0.22 a trip on average.

Only 1.2% of app pickups enter the Manhattan congestion zone, the lowest share in Brooklyn (Canarsie also rounds to 1.2% but is slightly higher). Airport trips are 2.8% of app pickups. Yellow trips are longer (median 5.1 miles and $26.50), and just 1.5% of them reached the congestion zone.

Pickup rules and curb signs

East New York is in TLC's Hail Zone. Yellow and green cabs may take hails; app and other for-hire drivers need a base dispatch for every pickup (80-19(c)(1), Chapter 80). A green cab that takes a hail here and drops off in Manhattan below East 96th or West 110th Street may not take a hail there. This is general information, not legal advice. See who can pick up where.

Curb signs: DOT's sign data shows a "TAXI/FHV PICK-UP/DROP-OFF ONLY" location on Livonia Avenue between New Lots Avenue and Warwick Street (nfid-uabd). There is no relief stand or taxi stand in the data for zone 76 (checked October 12, 2026). Obey the sign on the street, which can differ from the data.
