The numbers are TLC trip records (yellow taxis, green cabs, Uber and Lyft) for September 2025 to August 2026, counted by TLC Help. Non-app car service trips are not in the records.

'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). Fares and pay

App trips are short: 2.58 miles and 11.6 minutes at the median, with a $14.34 fare and $11.63 driver pay (15th of the island's 19 zones with more than 1,000 pickups). Tips are low at 3.1% of the fare, about $0.62. Pay per engaged hour is $66.24, a figure that leaves out time between trips.

Yellow taxi trips are a different kind of ride. Their median is 7.18 miles, 25.2 minutes and a $33.32 metered fare, before tolls, tips and surcharges. With only 346 pickups in a year, they are too few to plan a shift around.
