New Dorp/Midland Beach (taxi zone 172) averages about 472 pickups a day and is busiest on Saturday afternoons, not weekday mornings. App trips from here pay well per trip for Staten Island ($14.10 median), but they are slow: 13.7 minutes for 3.33 miles. So pay per hour with a rider is among the lowest on the island.
The numbers are TLC trip records (yellow, green, Uber and Lyft) for September 2025 to August 2026, counted by TLC Help. Car service and livery trips that skip the apps do not appear in it.
Zone 172 at a glance
New Dorp/Midland Beach has three neighbors on TLC's map: South Beach/Dongan Hills (214), Heartland Village/Todt Hill (118) and Oakwood (176). Its "Boro Zone" label is a TLC data category, not a legal boundary (zones explained).
Busy all afternoon, busiest on Saturday
On weekdays there is a morning bump at 8 a.m. (about 32 pickups), then a long, even afternoon: about 29–32 an hour from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday has no morning rush but builds to about 33 at 4 p.m. and stays near 31–32 into the evening. An average Saturday totals about 523 pickups, more than a weekday (about 475) or a Sunday (about 403).
Month by month
App pickups ran from 12,718 in September 2025 to a high of 15,608 in December 2025. March 2026 (15,554) was almost as busy. Summer 2026 eased to about 13,600–14,400 a month. Yellow taxis made 254 pickups over the year, the 6th-most on Staten Island, and made 929 drop-offs here. Of those yellow pickups, 9.1% were charged the Congestion Relief Zone fee, far above the 2.2% for app pickups here. That is a small group of trips, so read it as a hint, not a pattern.
Where trips go
18.3% of pickups stay in the zone and 13.4% go to South Beach/Dongan Hills. Then come Oakwood (7.7%), Heartland Village/Todt Hill (7.4%), Great Kills (6.5%) and Bloomfield/Emerson Hill (5.2%). All ten top destinations are on Staten Island. The same zones send riders in: 19.3% of drop-offs started inside the zone and 12.5% in South Beach/Dongan Hills.
Why good per-trip pay isn't good hourly pay
The median app trip pays $14.10 on a $17.10 fare. That beats the north shore, where St. George pays $10.80. But it takes 13.7 minutes to go 3.33 miles. Compare Mariners Harbor: 2.83 miles in 10.8 minutes for $11.30. Measured per hour with a rider, New Dorp works out to $65.56, below Mariners Harbor's $68.27. And engaged hours leave out the drive to each pickup, so real hourly pay is lower for both. Riders tip 5.0% of the fare, about $1.16 a trip. To see how your own pay adds up, read your Uber/Lyft pay statement.

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Monthly cells with 1–9 trips are shown as blank (null). Pairs with fewer than 10 trips are not listed.
