Woodlawn/Wakefield (TLC zone 259) is a border zone: one in four trips that start here ends outside New York City. In the 12 months from September 2025 to August 2026, 927,588 trips started here, about 2,541 a day, and 721,014 ended here. Uber and Lyft did 99% of the pickups. Most app rides are short, so the median driver pay per trip is one of the lowest in the Bronx.
These counts cover yellow cabs, green cabs and Uber/Lyft trips in TLC's trip files. Trips booked straight through a local car service, without an app company, are missing.
Zone 259 in short
TLC lists the zone in the Bronx with the data label "Boro Zone" (a label for data, not a legal line). Its three neighbours on TLC's zone map are Van Cortlandt Park, Williamsbridge/Olinville and Eastchester.
More trips leave than arrive
For every 100 pickups there are only 78 drop-offs, the lowest ratio of any Bronx zone. In plain numbers, about 2,541 rides start here each day and about 1,975 end here. The trip files do not say why.
When rides start
Weekday mornings lead: 8 a.m. has about 209 pickups, then 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. (about 166 each). As in most Bronx zones, Saturday is busier than a weekday overall (about 2,768 pickups against 2,528), and its trips are spread across the afternoon, peaking at 3 p.m. Sunday has a late-night tail: midnight is one of its three busiest hours, and 16.8% of Sunday pickups start between midnight and 5 a.m.
September 2025 was the quietest month (66,895 pickups) and March 2026 the busiest (85,904). August 2026 had 76,687, about 15% more than September 2025. September was the low month in almost every Bronx zone, so this rise is mostly a borough-wide pattern, not something special to Woodlawn.
Where trips go
The top destination is "Outside NYC" at 25.5% of all pickups. This is TLC's zone 265, which covers every place outside the city, so the data cannot show how many go to Westchester, New Jersey or elsewhere. Inside the city, trips stay in the north-east Bronx: the zone itself (14%), Williamsbridge/Olinville (9.1%), Eastchester (6.2%) and Co-op City (4.4%). No Manhattan zone makes the top 10.
Fares and pay
The median app trip is 2.65 miles and 12.2 minutes, with a $14.56 fare and $12.70 driver pay (tips and tolls not included). Pay per engaged hour is $66.65, sixth in the Bronx, because the trips are quick. That figure leaves out time spent waiting and driving to the pickup. App riders tipped 2.0% of the fare, $0.39 a trip on average.
Yellow taxis are rare here (7,610 pickups, 0.8% of the total), but their trips are long: median 10.03 miles, 36.1 minutes and a $38.50 meter fare.
Rules for trips that cross the city line
The zone is in TLC's Hail Zone, so yellow and green cabs may take street hails here (Chapter 51). App and other FHV drivers may only take trips booked through their base (80-19(c)(1)).
With a quarter of trips leaving the city, taxi and green cab drivers should know the out-of-city rules in Chapter 80:
- Westchester or Nassau: keep the meter on. The fare is the meter for the part inside NYC plus twice the meter for the part outside. Explain this and the tolls before you start, and tell the rider when you cross the city line (80-17(f)(2)). See 80-17(f)(2).
- Other places outside NYC (not Newark Airport): agree a flat dollar price before the trip; "double the meter" is not a flat rate (80-17(f)(1)).
- You must not refuse a Westchester or Nassau trip unless a reason in 80-20(b) applies, such as having driven more than 8 hours in a 24-hour period.

Stands: DOT's relief-stand data shows no relief stand in zone 259 (checked 2026-10-12). The closest listed one is on East 233rd Street in Williamsbridge/Olinville. One current DOT "taxi stand" sign record on Cranford Avenue (between Barnes and Furman Avenues) has no map coordinates, so we could not confirm its zone. Check the posted sign before you wait there.

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Monthly cells with 1–9 trips are shown as blank (null). Pairs with fewer than 10 trips are not listed.

Frequently asked questions
How busy is Woodlawn/Wakefield for Uber and Lyft drivers?
Busy for the Bronx. TLC trip records show 927,588 pickups in zone 259 from September 2025 to August 2026, about 2,541 a day, which puts it 17th of the Bronx's 43 zones. Uber and Lyft did 99% of them.
Where do trips from Woodlawn and Wakefield go?
One in four (25.5%) end outside New York City, the second-highest share in the Bronx after Van Cortlandt Park. The trip data labels these 'Outside NYC' and does not say where. Another 14% stay inside the zone and 9.1% go to Williamsbridge/Olinville next door.
Why are there more pickups than drop-offs in this zone?
The data shows about 2,541 pickups but only about 1,975 drop-offs a day. That is the biggest gap of any Bronx zone (0.78 drop-offs per pickup). The trip records do not explain it.
Can I take a street hail in Woodlawn in a green cab?
Yes. All of the Bronx is in TLC's Hail Zone, where green cabs may accept hails. Uber and Lyft drivers may not take hails anywhere; they must only take trips booked through their base or app.
