Bayside (TLC zone 16) starts about 1,496 rides a day, a middle-of-the-pack number for Queens (35th of 67 zones outside the airports). Two things set it apart. Weekend nights run late: Sunday's busiest hour is 1 a.m. And 8% of trips leave New York City, the zone's second most common destination. App trips here move fast, so pay per engaged hour is among the best in Queens.

We built these numbers from a year of TLC trip records (September 2025 to August 2026) for yellow taxis, green cabs and app services such as Uber and Lyft.

'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Medians/rates need ≥250 trips (else null). labels are LocationIDs as strings; zones[] has names, boroughs, service_zone (from taxi_zone_lookup.csv), suggested slugs and neighbouring zone ids (shared boundary, from taxi_zones.zip).

Where trips go

19.2% of trips stay inside Bayside. Next is Outside of NYC (8%), then Oakland Gardens (6.0%), Bay Terrace/Fort Totten (5.9%), Murray Hill-Queens (5.4%) and Flushing (5.2%). Airport trips are few: only 3.7% of app pickups. Trips into Manhattan's congestion zone are rare too (2.6% of app pickups).

The flow out of the city is mostly one way. Riders arriving in Bayside come from Bayside itself (19.5% of drop-offs), Bay Terrace/Fort Totten (6.5%), Oakland Gardens (6.1%) and Flushing (5.9%), and "Outside of NYC" is not in the top ten origins. So far fewer recorded trips come into Bayside from outside the city than go the other way.

Fares and pay

The median app trip is 3.39 miles in only 12.8 minutes: a $16.95 fare and $13.68 driver pay (39th of 67). Because trips are quick, pay per engaged hour is $69.30, 11th in Queens. Engaged time leaves out waiting and driving to pickups, so it is not what you earn per hour. App riders tipped 4.6% of the fare, above the Queens middle of 3.3%.

Rules for trips here and out of the city

  • Bayside is in TLC's Hail Zone (Chapter 51). Yellow and green cabs may take hails. App and other FHV drivers must only pick up base-dispatched trips (80-19(c)(1); who can pick up where).
  • Trips out of the city: Rule 80-20(a)(1) says a driver must not refuse a passenger to any destination in NYC, Westchester, Nassau or Newark Airport without a justifiable reason. Taxi fares outside NYC are figured differently; see out-of-city taxi fares and tolls on trips outside NYC.
  • For breaks, note that DOT's data has no relief stand in Bayside; the nearest Queens ones are more than 5 miles west, in Jackson Heights and Woodside (relief stands guide).
