Charleston/Tottenville (taxi zone 44) gives app drivers the best pay per hour with a rider on Staten Island: $79.22. The reason is speed. The median trip here is one of the longest on the island (3.79 miles) but takes only 11.4 minutes. The zone is also very self-contained: 35.7% of its trips start and end inside it, more than any other Staten Island zone.
Numbers are from TLC trip records for September 2025 to August 2026 (yellow taxis, green cabs, Uber and Lyft), counted by TLC Help. Black car and livery trips outside the app companies are not covered.
Zone 44 at a glance
On TLC's map, zone 44 has three neighbors: Eltingville/Annadale/Prince's Bay (84), Freshkills Park (99) and Rossville/Woodrow (204). TLC files it as "Boro Zone", a label in its data, not a legal boundary (zones explained). It is one of seven Staten Island zones with more drop-offs (120,959) than pickups (119,843).
Evening pickups, morning drop-offs
Weekday trips run in two directions at two times. Drop-offs here peak at 8 a.m. (about 25), while pickups peak at 5 p.m. (about 24). Weekday pickups stay above 20 an hour from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday is the biggest day, at about 390 pickups, against about 323 on a weekday and 294 on a Sunday. From 1 p.m. to midnight, Saturday holds at 20–23 pickups an hour, with about 23 still at 11 p.m. The busiest Sunday hour is midnight (about 22), and 22% of Sunday pickups start between midnight and 5 a.m.
Month by month
App pickups were lowest in September 2025 (8,628) and highest in May 2026 (10,742). December 2025 (10,654) was almost as busy. Summer 2026 held at about 10,300–10,600 a month. Yellow taxis made 39 pickups and 300 drop-offs in the year.
Where trips go: local, or out of state
More than a third of trips (35.7%) stay inside the zone. The rest go mostly to its south-shore neighbors: Eltingville/Annadale/Prince's Bay (9.9%), Rossville/Woodrow (9.2%), Arden Heights (5.4%) and Great Kills (5.4%). Outside NYC comes 6th at 4.9%, the highest share on the island, and Newark Airport takes 2.7%. Just 1.7% of app pickups were charged the Congestion Relief Zone fee, 15th of 19.
If you drive into New Jersey, Port Authority crossings charge only when you come back into New York: $14.79 off-peak or $16.79 peak for a car with a NY/NJ E-ZPass, $23.30 by mail (as of October 12, 2026; Port Authority). Details on the Outerbridge Crossing page.
Fares and pay
The median app trip pays $13.56 before tips on a $17.72 fare (4th-highest fare of 19 zones). That is the island's middle for pay per trip. Pay per engaged hour, $79.22, is the top on Staten Island, ahead of Rossville/Woodrow ($78.85). Remember that engaged hours leave out time driving to the pickup and waiting for the next request. Tips averaged 5.1% of the fare, $1.43 a trip, and 3.2% of app pickups went to an airport.
"Of 19" leaves out Great Kills Park (zone 110), which had only 540 pickups.
Picking up in zone 44
- Hails: yellow taxis and green cabs may take them. TLC's Hail Zone is the whole city except Manhattan below East 96th and West 110th Streets and the airports (Chapter 51).
- App drivers: only base-dispatched trips. Picking up a hail in an FHV breaks 80-19(c)(1), $200–$350 for a first violation (Chapter 80). See who can pick up where.
- Relief stands: DOT's list has none on Staten Island (vqu8-xef9, checked October 12, 2026).

Data on this page
Aggregates of public data. They describe trips and vehicles, never individual people.
Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Monthly cells with 1–9 trips are shown as blank (null). Pairs with fewer than 10 trips are not listed.
