In short: Staten Island's 20 taxi zones had 4.08 million pickups in the 12 months to August 2026, about 1.4% of the city's total. Nearly all of them (99.9%) were Uber and Lyft trips. Saint George/New Brighton was the busiest zone (559,932 pickups), then Bloomfield/Emerson Hill, Stapleton and Mariners Harbor. Most trips stay on the island: 86% of pickups ended in another Staten Island zone or the same one. The most common busy hour is 8 a.m. on weekdays.
The numbers at a glance
All 20 zones, ranked
The top five were Saint George/New Brighton (559,932 pickups), Bloomfield/Emerson Hill (412,851), Stapleton (378,637), Mariners Harbor (370,911) and Heartland Village/Todt Hill (270,757). At the bottom are two parks: Great Kills Park (540 pickups) and Freshkills Park (8,131). Among the neighborhood zones, Rossville/Woodrow (71,710), Arden Heights (76,461) and Oakwood (90,724) had the fewest.
Pickups and drop-offs are close in most zones. Stapleton had 69,473 more pickups than drop-offs and Mariners Harbor 56,092 more. Bloomfield/Emerson Hill had 41,296 more drop-offs than pickups. The data counts trips; it does not say what riders were going to or from.
Taxis are almost absent
Yellow taxis made 4,401 pickups on Staten Island in a year, and green cabs 71. Yellow cabs ended 14,061 trips on the island, so they drop off about three times as many riders as they pick up there. For a yellow cab driver, these numbers mean a trip to Staten Island will often end with an empty drive back. Use the toll calculator to see what the bridges cost on the way back, and read who pays tolls on taxi trips.
Where Staten Island trips go
Brooklyn is the main off-island destination (6.8% of pickups). Manhattan takes 2.2%, and Newark Airport 1.4%. In each zone, the share of app pickups going to an airport ranged from 0.6% in Freshkills Park and 1.0% in Saint George to 4.8% in Rossville/Woodrow.
The morning peak
11 of the 20 zones have their busiest hour at 8 a.m. on weekdays, and one more at 7 a.m. Only a few peak on weekends, such as Heartland Village/Todt Hill (Saturday 7 p.m.). Staten Island is a weekday-morning market. In Manhattan, peaks are spread across weekday evenings and weekend nights.
App pay per trip
Median Uber/Lyft driver pay per trip ranged from $10.57 in Stapleton and $10.80 in Saint George/New Brighton to $15.29 in Heartland Village/Todt Hill and $15.12 in South Beach/Dongan Hills (zones with at least 100,000 pickups). This is pay for the trip itself, before tips and tolls. It does not include the time you spent getting to the rider, so it is not an hourly figure.
Stands and breaks
DOT's relief-stand list (updated October 1, 2026) has no relief stands on Staten Island, the only borough with none. DOT's current sign records show one taxi stand location, with five signs, listed as the ferry terminal, Ramp F. See the relief stand gap by borough and taxi stands by borough.
Data caveats and limits
- Period: September 2025 to August 2026 trip records. TLC publishes about two months late and may revise.
- Coverage: yellow, green and Uber/Lyft only. Non-app car service trips are not counted, and this data can't show how many there are.
- Small numbers: with so few taxi trips, yellow and green shares here round to 0%. Medians need 250+ trips.
- What it can't tell you: exact pickup spots, waiting time, cash tips, or why a zone is busy.
