Aggregated by TLC Help from TLC trip records, Sep 2025 – Aug 2026 (pickup date; TLC publishes trip files about two months after the month ends and may revise them). 'App' = high-volume for-hire services (Uber, Lyft). Taxi records with a negative fare (reversals) are excluded. Averages, medians and rates use 'clean' trips only: 1 minute to 4 hours, more than 0 and under 150 miles, fare above $0 and under $1,000. 'Fare' is the metered fare_amount for taxis and base_passenger_fare for app trips — before tolls, tips, taxes and surcharges — so it is not what the passenger paid in total. App driver_pay is TLC's 'total driver pay (not including tolls or tips and net of commission, surcharges, or taxes)'. Tips are separate. 'Per engaged hour' divides pay by passenger time only (pickup to drop-off). It leaves out time driving to pickups and waiting for requests, so real hourly earnings are lower; it is not the TLC minimum-pay formula. Medians/rates need ≥250 trips (else null). labels are LocationIDs as strings; zones[] has names, boroughs, service_zone (from taxi_zone_lookup.csv), suggested slugs and neighbouring zone ids (shared boundary, from taxi_zones.zip).

Zone 158 at a glance

The TLC lookup table calls this zone a "Yellow Zone". That label only sorts the trip data; it is not a legal line. Zone 158 borders four zones: West Village, Hudson Sq, East Chelsea and West Chelsea/Hudson Yards. West Street (Route 9A) runs through it for about 3 km, according to the city's street centerline map.

Riders arrive in the early evening and leave late at night. On weekdays, 27.6% of drop-offs happen in the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. hours, with the peak at 6 p.m. Pickups don't peak until 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

On Saturday, pickups keep climbing to 11 p.m. (503 an hour), and the next hour, Sunday midnight, is busier still (507). Sunday 1 a.m. adds 477 more. (In this data, "Saturday midnight" means the start of Saturday, so Friday late night.) Mornings are quiet all week: only 4% of Saturday pickups start between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Yellow, green and app

App: 1,340,640 pickups. Yellow: 449,238. Green pickups were so few (1 to 9 in the whole year) that the dataset hides the number, while 504 green trips ended here. Green cabs may drop off but may not start trips south of East 96th/West 110th Streets (who can pick up where).

Fares and driver pay

Yellow trips from here had a median of 1.91 miles and a $16.20 meter fare, above the $14.20 middle for Manhattan's Yellow Zone zones. App trips had a median fare of $26.46 and median driver pay of $17.70. Pay per engaged hour ($66.92) leaves out waiting and driving to pickups, so it is not an hourly wage.

Congestion zone and West Street

The zone lies south of 60th Street, so it is inside the MTA Congestion Relief Zone. But the MTA zone excludes West Street/West Side Highway (Route 9A), which runs through this taxi zone. The records show 99.1% of app pickups and 97.7% of yellow pickups were charged the fee; they don't say why the others weren't. See is congestion pricing charged on the FDR Drive? for how the highway exclusions work.

Stands and practical notes

DOT's relief-stand list has no relief stand in zone 158 (checked 2026-10-12). By our map check, the nearest is on West 16th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues (open to taxis and FHVs), about 770 feet from the zone. The parking-sign file shows one current taxi-stand sign: West 13th Street between Washington Street and Tenth Avenue, south side. App drivers may not pick up at a taxi stand (TLC Rule 80-19(d)(2)), and taxi drivers must join the back of the line (80-19(d)(4)). See taxi stand rules and the relief stand finder.

Frequently asked questions

What is taxi zone 158?

Zone 158 is the TLC taxi zone called Meatpacking/West Village West, on Manhattan's west side next to the Hudson River. The TLC lookup table labels it a Yellow Zone, which is a data label, not a legal boundary.

When is Meatpacking busiest for pickups?

Late on weekend nights. An average Saturday has about 6,680 pickups against 4,560 on a weekday, with the Saturday peak at 11 p.m. On Sundays the top hours are midnight and 1 a.m., and a third of Sunday pickups happen between midnight and 5 a.m.

Why are some trips from zone 158 not charged the congestion fee?

The trip records only show whether the fee was charged: 99.1% of app pickups and 97.7% of yellow pickups were. They do not say why the rest were not. The MTA zone excludes West Street/Route 9A, which runs through this taxi zone.

Is there a relief stand in the Meatpacking zone?

No. DOT's relief-stand list (checked 2026-10-12) has none inside zone 158. Neighbouring East Chelsea (zone 68) has five. DOT's sign file shows one taxi-stand sign, on West 13th Street between Washington Street and Tenth Avenue.
